The Miami Marathon and Half Marathon, formerly the ING Marathon and Half Marathon, is Miami’s premiere race, and has successfully brought Miami into the conversation of great running cities. Taking place annually in late January or early February, the marathon and half-marathon play host to over 25,000 participants each year, beginning at 601 Biscayne Boulevard, right in between the American Airlines Arena and The Freedom Tower.
The Miami Marathon slogan, “Run Miami Famous,” lives up to the hype. Almost every famous Miami landmark from the big screen are covered on the 26.2 mile course. The race takes runners from around the world across the MacArthur Causeway, passing landmarks such as Watson Island, Port Miami, Palm Island, Star Island and Fisher Island on their way to Miami Beach. After curling around South Pointe in South Beach, the race heads north up the famous Ocean Drive, through the City of Miami Beach, including a half mile stretch along the Miami Beach Golf Club, and we’re still just getting started.
All those sights are within the first 8 miles of the race, before crossing back to Downtown Miami through the beautiful island chain of the Venetian Causeway. The course continues along NE 15th Street, past the Omni Center, and then heads south down Miami Avenue, through Downtown Miami.
The half marathoners finish right around the corner, at Bayfront Park, while the full marathon runners continue south down Miami Avenue, through the Financial District and into the historic tree canopied neighborhood of Coconut Grove. Once reaching downtown Coconut Grove, the marathoners head back north past Miami City Hall and up scenic Bayshore Drive before making a right to arguably the most breathtaking view of the entire race halfway up Rickenbacker Causeway.
